When frequent Lone Star Music contributor Mike Ethan Messick isn’t conducting artist interviews and knocking out insightful album reviews — or occupied with his “other” day job, helping to run his family’s pool business — he moonlights as a legit Texas songwriter in his own right. And a damn good one, too, as he’s now proven across three albums. His latest, How Close We Came, was released earlier this month, and to celebrate, we called him into “the office” — Superfly’s Lone Star Music Emporium in San Marcos — to play pretty much the whole thing for us solo acoustic. Here he is performing a stripped-down version of one of the album’s wildest tunes, “Cut & Shoot.”
